God’s Infinitude: How His Absolute Being Shapes Our Lives

Woman standing in a field with arms outstretched

There is no corner of this earth where God is not present. God is infinite. The phrase is often spoken but not easily understood. The idea of the infinite nature of God can be confounding and overwhelming. When we study the universe, we learn that —as far as we know— the universe is infinite; there are no boundaries to what is out there.

Similarly, God’s presence is all-encompassing, all-knowing, and without limits. Understanding this takes faith and patience.

Let’s delve a little deeper.

What is the Meaning of Infinity?

Most of our understanding of things in the world revolves around finite structures. For example, we understand that our existence is finite, our possessions have limits, and so on. In some ways, the finite nature of most things creates limitations in our ability to easily comprehend such a concept. It’s why learning to understand God takes a little leap of faith.

The concept of infinity exists in many disciplines, including science, cosmology, philosophy, and mathematics. Infinity describes anything that is without bounds; it is endless. This might apply to a series of numbers (such as the Fibonacci sequence) or a perpetual cycle of the universe. It also applies to understanding God.

In Revelation 19:6, “Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah…””

God’s greatness is present in all things.

What is the Meaning of God’s Infinite Nature?

God is not constricted by time or space or any of the limits that bounds earthly beings. His nature is beyond everything and He is all-knowing with unlimited knowledge, understanding, and compassion. It is this infinite nature that relates to our understanding of how God works in our lives. It is through this almost incomprehensible nature that we build our faith.

Let’s break up some of the concepts to get a better understanding.

The Omnipotence of God

God is all-powerful. The word omnipotence translates in Latin to “all” and “powerful.” What does this mean for believers? It means that God’s power is greater than the power of anything else on earth we could possibly conceive of. He is above all governing bodies, He is beyond nature, He is greater than all beings.

As followers of Christ, we understand that God’s power in the world can manifest itself in ways that are beyond understanding and he has the power to steer all things towards good.

The Omniscience of God

The word omniscience translates to ‘all-knowing.’ This refers to God’s understanding of all things and knowing of all things. Not only did he create the universe and its occupants, but he understands them at every level. He understands the needs and complexities of being human and of being an animal in the wild.

In John 3:20, it states that “God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.”

His knowledge goes beyond human knowledge and understanding.

The Omnipresence of God

The meaning is in the word. His presence is everywhere, all at once. For many, this is a disconcerting question. They ask: how can God be everywhere and allow atrocities to happen? It’s a deep question that takes us to the nature of the relationship between God and man and how he endows us with free will. His presence is felt, this power is at hand, but he does not interfere on behalf of man when man chooses a certain path.

In Jeremiah 23:24, God says, “Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?… Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” The passage illustrates God’s presence in all places and corners of earth. Man cannot go anywhere to hide.

Thinking of the three concepts together gives us a glimpse into the idea of God’s infinity. Even then, grasping the concept can take some time and reflection.

The Transcendence of God

Because of God’s infinite nature, it means that he is transcendent, which means he is in all creation and is also independent of it. He is eternal.

How Does This Play Into Our Faith?

So how does God’s infinite nature shape our lives? The understanding that God is everywhere, that he understands us, and that he has a plan and can see all things, allows us to put our trust in him and in the resolution of all things in our life. God works things out for good and, sometimes, we just can’t understand it. This is where faith comes in.

Faith is all about putting our trust in God’s will.
